CONSTITUTION

for the

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, LOCKHART

UNITED METHODIST MEN

 

Article I

 

NAME

 

The name of the unit is the First United Methodist Church, Lockhart of Lockhart, Texas, chartered and certified annually by the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church.

 

Article II

 

PURPOSE

 

United Methodist Men shall be a creative, supportive fellowship of men who seek to know Jesus Christ, to grow spiritually, and to seek daily his will. Its primary purpose is to declare the centrality of Christ in the lives of men and in all their relationships.

 

Article III

 

CONCERNS

 

(1) To encourage knowledge of and support for the total mission of The United Method-ist Church.

(2) To engage in evangelism by sharing the fullness of the gospel in its personal and so-cial dimensions.

(3) To clarify and speak to the identity and role of the man in contemporary society.

(4) To seek commitment to discipleship.

(5) To study and become familiar with The United Methodist Church, its organization, doctrines and belief.

(6) To cooperate with all units of United Methodist Men in obtaining these objectives through district, conference, and church-wide goals.

(7) To support the National Congress of United Methodist Men, the National Prayer Ministry, Bible Study Program, Moving Methodist Program, Scouting Ministry, Every Man Shares Program (Evangelism, Mission & Spiritual Life) and other ministries, pro-gram, and projects sponsored by the National Office of United Methodist Men.

(8) To support district-wide projects that would provide a sense of community among the men of the Austin District, Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church.

(9) To demonstrate our commitment, as a group of dedicated men, to the ongoing support, care and development of the programs and facilities of the First United Methodist Church, Lockhart, Texas.

 

 

 

 

 

Article IV

 

ENCOURAGE EACH MAN IN THESE PERSONAL OBJECTIVES

 

(1) To engage daily in Bible study and prayer.

(2) To bear witness to Christís way in daily work and in all personal contacts through words and actions.

(3) To engage in some definite Christian service.

(4) To reach men in our community with a credible offer of the gospel and equip them as

spiritual leaders for their families, church, work and community.

 

Article V

 

MEMBERSHIP

 

(1) Men who subscribe to the major concerns and personal objectives stated above.

(2) The duly appointed Pastor and the Lay Leader of the church shall be ex officio members of the Executive Committee.

(3) (3) Membership may include men from other United Methodist Churches, men from other denominations, as well as non churched men of the community.

(4) Men who are members of the District, Conference, Jurisdiction or National Organiza-tions.

 

 

Article VI

 

MEETINGS

 

This unit shall hold meetings as specified in the By-Laws. The meeting held during the month of November each year shall be designated as the annual meeting. The election of of-ficers shall take place at this meeting. Additional meetings of United Methodist Men may be called by the President, Pastor, or by a majority of the Executive Committee.

 

Article VII

 

OFFICERS

 

The officers shall be: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. They shall be elected at the annual meeting for the next calendar year .

 

Article VIII

 

ESTABLISHMENT OF COMMITTEES AND TASK FORCES

 

The unit shall establish such committees and task forces it deems necessary in order to carry out the business and objectives of the unit.

 

 

 

 

Article IX

 

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

 

The Executive Committee shall be composed of the following: The officers and all com-mittee chairs. The Pastor is an ex officio members of the Executive Committee. General administration and supervision of the affairs of the unit are vested in the Executive Committee.

 

Article X

 

CORRELATION

 

The work of the unit shall be correlated with the total program of the church as initiated and directed by the Council on Ministries and Administrative Board, under leadership of the Pastor.

 

Article XI

 

FINANCES

 

The program of the unit shall be financed by such means as the members may approve on the recommendation of the Executive Committee.

 

Article XII

 

CLUSTER UNIT

 

Because of too few men, low interest, or for other reasons it may become desirable for the men from one or more churches to come together and form a Cluster Unit of United Methodist Men with appropriate officers, such future reorganization is authorized under this Constitution, if necessary.

 

Article XIII

 

BY-LAWS

 

By-Laws in harmony with the provisions of this Constitution may be adopted by two-thirds majority vote of all members, present and voting, at a regular or called meeting, provided proper advance notice be given to the membership of such proposed change.

 

ADOPTION

 

This Constitution was adopted in compliance with Article XIII on February 18, 1999

and is in effect as of that date. Officers for calendar year 1999 were elected at that meeting and will serve as required by the adopted Constitution and By-laws.

 

 

 

 

 

 

BY-LAWS

for the

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, LOCKHART

UNITED METHODIST MEN

 

Article I

 

Order of Business:

The business of the Unit shall be conducted in an orderly and business-like manner according to its adopted Constitu-tion and By-Laws. 2Any question not covered by the By--Laws shalt be decided in accordance with Robertís Rules of Order.

 

Article II

 

Duties of Officers:

 

A. President: The President shall be the presiding officer of the Unit and shall preside at the annual, regular, and special meetings of the unit and the Executive Committee. He shall have general oversight over the work of the unit. He shall be an ex officio member of all committees and task forces, except the Nominating Committee.

 

 

B. Vice President: The Vice president shall assist the Presi-dent, accept assignments made to him, preside in the ab-sence of the President, and assume full responsibility of that office.

 

 

C. Secretary: The Secretary shall be responsible for keeping the minutes and all records shall include all meetings of the unit and the Executive Committee--the annual, regular, and special. The Secretary shall be responsible for keeping re-cords suitable for historical filing.

 

D. Treasurer: The Treasurer shall collect and disburse all funds. Adequate records shall be kept and a report shall be made at all meetings of the unit and the Executive Commit-tee. Requests for disbursements of funds not approved in the budget shall be made to the President, Executive Com-mittee, or the Unit.

 

Article III

 

Committees:

 

A. Executive Committee: The Executive Committee makes plans for the Unit and evaluates same. It transacts interim business. However, all transacting must be approved by the Unit at its next regular or special meeting. The Executive Committee shall meet at the call of the President or as often as it deems necessary.

 

B. Projects: The Projects Committee shall plan and execute all approved projects of the Unit.

C. Program: The Program Committee shall plan all programs both on a short-range and a long-range basis and publish the schedule to the membership in advance.

 

D. Nominating: The Nominating Committee shall appointed by the President in advance of the annual meeting of the organiza-tion. The Nominating Committee shall consist of five per-sons including the pastor and lay leader. The Nominating Committee shall present at the annual meeting its slate for officers and chairmen of all standing committees. Additional nominations may be made from the floor.

 

 

Article IV

 

Appointment of Committees and Task Forces: The Presi-dent, in consultation with the Executive Committee, shall ap-point additional committees and task forces deemed necessary in order to carry out the purpose and objectives of the unit.

 

Article V

 

Regular Meetings: Regular meetings of the First United Methodist Church, Lockhart, Texas Fellowship of United Methodist Men shall be held at such place and time as determined by the President and the Executive Committee after consultation with the membership.

 

Article VI

 

Voting Procedures: Voting in an election for officers shall be by secret ballot. Voting on other matters at all regular and special meetings shall be by voice vote, show of hands, or by standing unless otherwise ordered by vote of organization.

 

Article VII

 

Vacancy: When a vacancy occurs in an office or a committee, the vacancy shall be filled by the President for the unexpired term, after consultation with the Executive Committee.

 

Article VIII

 

By-Laws: The By-laws may be amended at any annual, regular, or special meeting of the Unit by a two-thirds majority of all members, present and voting, provided the notice of such proposed amendment or amendments have been given 10 days in advance of the meeting.

 

Adoption

 

These By-Laws were adopted in compliance with Article XIII of the Constitution

on February 18, 1999 and are effective as of that date. Officers for calendar year 1999

were elected at that meeting and will serve as required by the adopted Constitution and By-laws.
